Endangered* KANGAROO Facts and Resources

Almost all kangaroos are NOT on endangered lists.  Almost all are not even considered threatened.  They are, however, mentioned here to raise awareness about something called "culling."  Most people in North America are not aware of it.  "Culling" is a very controversial issue and below you will find extensive links to both the pros and cons of it.  But before diving in to the research, it is important to remember the Passenger Pigeon.

Many years ago the Passenger Pigeon was roughly 5,000,000,000 in population.  Yes, that's Billion.  There were so many and they were such a nuisance that they were often deemed a pest. They were also tasty.  So, of course, commercial hunting began.  Aggressive hunting, combined with extreme and rapid habitat loss, led to the complete extinction of the Passenger Pigeon within 100 years.  Today, the population of Kangaroos numbers in the hundreds of millions. There are so many, and they are such a nuisance to many locals and their agriculture, that they are deemed a pest.  So, the government issues permits to "cull" them to help control the population.  They are also killed for commercial purposes.

The central issue, associated with almost all endangered animals, is habitat loss.  Was the Passenger Pigeon a pest on open land before cities and farms were built there?  Was the Kangaroo a pest before cities and farms took over?  Should animals be shot into extinction because we are leaving them nowhere else to go?  Nobody believed the Passenger Pigeon could possibly go extinct.  There were just too many.  Billions of them.  But they did and that is a fact.

Today, both sides of the "culling" story are equally important because we, as a civilization, and once again, have created the problem. Therefore, it is our responsibility to examine the results of our past actions and take a much more profound look at the big picture.
